Mission
Banda Nova Aliança is a Portuguese/American music organization that provides opportunities for people of all ages and skill levels to learn a musical instrument and perform throughout the community, bringing joy and entertainment to the public by fostering teamwork, creativity, and appreciation of music while building relationships within our society. Our vision is to inspire and challenge each member of the group to grow as an individual artist and valued member of the community, performing collaboratively and creating a united family of musicians who share a commitment to excellence and a passion for the art of music.
Our Story
On Sunday, September 12, 1993 at St. Anthony's Parish Hall in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, a meeting was held by José Ponceano and some close friends, including Manuel Fernandes, José Mancebo, Carlos Vieira, João Garcia, and Julio Alves, to discuss the formation of a philharmonic marching band. José Ponceano chose the name "Banda Nova Aliança de Santo António de Pawtucket" because it symbolized the unity between the band and parish community. He was elected the Band's first President, along with the following committee members: Vice President João Garcia, Secretary José Mancebo, and Assistant Secretary Carlos Vieira.
At the following meeting in October of the same year, 38 individuals - dedicated teachers, talented musicians, and students eager to learn to play music - expressed interest in becoming members of the Band. After months of practice, the Band performed publicly for the first time on Pentecost Sunday, May 22, 1994. With hard work and continued dedication, the Band has since shared their love of music with many others in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and around the world, including visits to Portugal (Azorean island of São Miguel) and Canada (cities of Toronto and Hamilton).
Today, we are a 501(c)(3) organization providing, at no cost, neighborhood children with a safe environment that allows them to build friendships and focus their energy and passion on learning to play classical musical instruments. All their hard work and talent is showcased to family, friends, and residents of the surrounding communities via live concert performances and processional events.
